This quote isn't unknown to us. It comes from musician Lou Reed during the 1992 album Magic and Loss, which was dedicated to two friends who died while recording. On the track Magic and Loss (The Summation), Reed writes:
And if the building's burning, move towards that door
but don't put the flames out
There's a bit of magic in everything
and then some loss to even things out
