Rosa Nouchette Carey (27 September 1840 – 9 July 1909) was an English author who mainly wrote stories for young women. She advocated that caring for a family and household should be treated as real work.
This quote is believed to be taken from Esther: A Book For Girls (1895). Carey's format of a fictitious young girl in a historical time period navigating complexities of family, adventures, morality, friendship, and societal expectations likely influenced the Pleasant Company's American Girl Doll series about a 100 years later in the 1980s.
The three volume ("triple decker") novels during Carey's life in 19th century Britain would later influence western novels. Given the high price at the time, roughly half the weekly wage of middle class family, most novels were borrowed by paying a subscription fee at circulatory libraries.
